What does SEO mean

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a website from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results.

In almost all circumstances, the earlier a website appears in the returned search results, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO can be tailored towards many kinds of search, including image search, local search,
and industry-specific search engines.

We can improve traffic to your site.

With some web design agencies, the question "Can you help us with search engine optimisation (SEO)" is basically a term that loosely translates as "Here is an opportunity for us to con the client into giving us hundreds of pounds for doing very little". You have probably seen things like "We will submit your site to 500 search engines for just £150" - to this I say you would be better off setting fire to your money; as you are more likely to get visitors to your site from being on the local news as the nutter who burned his cash rather than giving it to an unscrupulous web developer!

We do things differently :-)

We help you with search engine optimisation, but be warned, most of the most effective techniques involve work that you can do yourself for free (the reason for the warning is that the thought of having to do some of the work themselves scares many clients!).

Things you can do yourself to improve your search engine visibility include,,,

  • adding your site to free directories,
  • spreading links,
  • writing on forums (you usually get a free link back to your site doing this)
  • Writing some useful guides or information related to your industry -
things like a FAQ, guides or product / service comparisons.

Basically spend time writing content that people will find useful and will be searching for. By having a lot of this type of traffic, you may not be getting business from every visitor, but search engines will think "This site gets a lot of visitors, so must have good relevant content, I will rank it more highly in search results ".

SEO is a labour of love and you will need to put a lot of effort in to get yourself up the rankings. Keywords alone will not help you, but they will play a part, but only if incorporated in the correct way.

Some things you can do yourself to help your site gain traffic include...

  • Add a links page to your site and make sure these links are reciprocal i.e.
if 118118 links to your site, make sure your site links BACK to your 118118
  • Updating your site regularly will help a lot
  • Add yourself to as many free web directories as possible
  • Join industry related bodies and get linked to and from their site
  • Consider setting up a blog - use this to air your views on news relevant to your industry - legislation changes, current trends etc
  • The longer your site has been established, the more relevant search engines will think it is - especially if it is regularly updated with fresh meaningful content.

Spread the word...

  • Don't forget that offline marketing is just as important and we can help with that too! Click here for details of our print services.
  • Perhaps also consider other casual free advertising - many places will let you leave business cards and flyers for free (places like sandwhich bars, barber shops, wholesalers, waiting rooms, cab offices etc)

Importantly we need to ensure that your site is hosted appropriately so that we can incorporate the powerful Google Analytics code into your site which will enable you and us to track your site traffic, thus allowing us to make tweaks and changes to the content to maximise visitors per keyword.
